I have been working on my WIP (work-in-progress), a novel, since my last blog in February. I have spent many hours researching. The novel is set in two different time periods and three main locations: the 1940’s to 1950’s and 1968, in Queensland, New South Wales and Northern California. I have one chapter set in Northern California, and the history and the beauty of the area has taken root in me. I imagine Indians, grubstake gold miners, and the dust from wagon trains rolling westward. I have not studied American literature although I have read it. Recently I read Annie Proulx, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and I have a Flannery O’Connor biography by Brad Gooch on my bedside table waiting to be read. Another favourite book is Crossing to Safety a novel by Wallace Stegner. I also recently read Z, A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, and Caleb’s Crossing, (written by Australian author Geraldine Brooks) which won the Pulitzer Prize. It is the story of a young Native American man from Martha’s Vineyard. I have fallen in love with American literature all over again. I will write about the proposal on this blog this coming Sunday. I know feel my novel is at the stage where I can take time out to write about a writer’s life, good writing (and reading) Elise.
